New Blog!
Feeling the need to separate my writings about love, family, and the horror genre from my religious criticisms and political ramblings, I have decided to create a forum solely for my atheistic writings. I am planning on slowly importing past posts from Words of Wrath onto this one as well as posting newer blogs. This is a comment to your Myth of Afterlife post on your new blog, Godless and Black. For some reason I had difficulty posting on the new blog comment section.
Some of what you have explained here sounds similar to the Buddhist idea of emptiness or no self:
Here's a quote from Zen Teacher Brad Warner:
"The real situation is that this thing we call "me" is not our property. It is an expression of the Universe. As such there is nowhere it can possibly go when we breathe our last. This me is not a soul that flies up to Heaven or descends to Hell. It is not an Atman that reincarnates in a different body. It is not a True Self that merges into the All-ness of Being. It can’t be limited in any of those silly and trivial ways. Even what I just said about it being an expression of the Universe puts far too many arbitrary limits on it."
Now back to Lone Wolf's thoughts:
The problem with Buddhist who claim reincarnation as truth is the fundamental Buddhist belief that there is no Atman or no soul. Then some Buddhist turn around and say that the consciousness transports to another body. What the hell is the difference between consciousness and soul? The idea of emptiness is that there is no "I" in the first place. What we call "I" is just a concept. The duality of "I" and the Universe as two separate things is a myth according to Buddhism. Therefore there is no "I", soul, or consciousness to be transported from one body to the next.
I've always liked the analogy of the waves of the ocean. People are like the waves of the ocean. Each wave is individual. We can say a wave begins and ends, is beautiful or ugly. But actually a wave is just part of the ocean. It's not separate from the ocean. The ocean is the waves true nature. The wave having the idea it's separate from the ocean is an illusion.
But what it comes down to for me is that I don't know what the fuck happens when I die really. Trying to answer that question is like banging my head against a wall over and over again. i have this life right here right now to deal with. So when it comes to death. I don't know and that is fine. When it comes to God, I don't know and does it really matter. I guess that makes me agnostic.
I live in the present moment, I die in the present moment. The past and future do not exist. Memories are just thoughts about the past (memories also change with time. We add and take away from the stored information which experienced at one point but does not exist anymore) Thoughts about the future are fantasy expectations which cause us a lot of problems because these thoughts are never the same as the real events we experience.
Just some ideas.

correction. Memories are just present thoughts interpreting fragments of past experiences. Then I mentioned that these memories transform and change over time, based on our manipulations of them, which pretty much makes them fantasies that are different what actually took place.
